Native to Japan China and Korea the Acer palmatums were introduced from Japan around the middle 1800's. Acer palmatums have to be among the most beautiful of all our garden trees. Acer palmatum is the original species from which a wide selection of cultivars were bred and is now the root stock onto which all of those many cultivars can be grafted. Not often available for retail sale, we none the less offer this beautiful small, slow growing deciduous tree, as it has its own merits. Often multi stemmed, with attractive smooth bark it produces a domed shaped small tree with dainty, lobed green leaves, often edged with purplish hues, which turn vivid reds and oranges in autumn. Attractive small red, typical, winged fruits are also produced in auutmn. Grows well in quite heavy dappled shade and can be expected to outlive many of the more decorative cultivars by many years! Very popular as a Bonsai subject. If growing in a pot or other container, use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous and can be grown in ordinary compost however they will grow better and give better colour in neutral to acid soil. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires.
