A medium sized broad-crowned deciduous tree that can easily be pruned as a large shrub with heart-shaped, to serrated dark green leaves that yellow in the autumn. The foliage is highly dimorphic often having different shaped foliage on the same plant. Insignificant green flowers are produced in the summer which are followed by dark purplish-red edible berries. The fruits are best eaten straight off the tree or immediately taken to the kitchen as they are delicate and do not travel well which is why you rarely see them for sale at the greengrocers. Planted in abundance by King James 1st for silk production little knowing that it was Morus alba that was required as the food plant for silkworms.
