Royal Fern Plant

(Matteuccia struthiopteris)

Size: Extra Extra Large

Origin: native

Light : Shade loving plant. But will tolerate full sun.

Care: Full Hard to UK.

The Matteuccia struthiopteris, is a particularly attractive fern, bearing large, pale green, lacy fronds. It’s an excellent foliage plant for moist, dappled shade and works particularly well when planted in groups. Grow it among other moisture- and shade loving plants such as on the edge of a pond, in woodland situations or in a large container on a shady patio. Matteuccia struthiopteris spreads slowly by underground rhizomes. The offsets can be dug up and moved in spring, but plants look best when left to form colonies. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Poised, damp-loving, hardy. It’s leaves are light yellow-green initially, with hard fronds, becoming darker later in the year, 60–183cm long. It prefers woodland, shady hedges, stream banks and mountain ledges but tolerates full sun, dry soil and even exposed, windy positions. It also grows in heathland, moorland, in the open on hillsides and mountains and especially among rocks.

We pride ourselves on recycling and reusing as much as we can so all our plants DO NOT come in pots we use recycled potting bags so we are able to post them to you. Please Understand Leaves will be cut, as we cannot guarantee the larger leaves will not get damaged in transit. This will not damage the plant in any way but you will have to wait until new leaves appear later in the year.
